The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test required by most graduate schools in the United States and many other countries. The GRE is divided into three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The Analytical Writing section assesses your ability to analyze and evaluate written arguments and express your ideas clearly and concisely in writing.

The Analytical Writing section consists of two tasks:

  • Task 1: Analyze an Issue
  • Task 2: Analyze an Argument

For each task, you will be given a prompt and 30 minutes to write an essay. The Issue task requires you to take a position on a given issue and support your position with evidence and reasoning. The Argument task requires you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a given argument and provide your own critical analysis.

The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6. A score of 6 indicates that you have a strong command of the English language and can effectively analyze and evaluate written arguments. A score of 0 indicates that you have difficulty understanding and responding to written arguments.

Mastering the Analytical Writing section of the GRE is crucial for a successful application to graduate school. A high score on the Analytical Writing section will demonstrate your ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, which is a key skill for success in graduate school.

Effective Strategies for Tackling the GRE Analytical Writing Tasks

There are a number of effective strategies that you can use to tackle the GRE Analytical Writing tasks. These strategies include:

  • Read the prompt carefully. Before you begin writing your essay, take a few minutes to read the prompt carefully and identify the key points. This will help you to focus your essay and ensure that you are addressing the task.
  • Brainstorm your ideas. Once you have read the prompt, take a few minutes to brainstorm your ideas. What are the main points that you want to make in your essay? What evidence and reasoning will you use to support your points?
  • Organize your essay. Before you begin writing your essay, take a few minutes to organize your thoughts. What is the best way to structure your essay? What are the main points that you want to make in each paragraph?
  • Write a clear and concise essay. Your essay should be well-organized and easy to read. Use clear and concise language. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that your reader may not understand.
  • Proofread your essay. Once you have finished writing your essay, take a few minutes to proofread it carefully. Make sure that there are no errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation.

Additional Tips for Success on the GRE Analytical Writing Section

In addition to the strategies listed above, there are a few additional tips that you can keep in mind to improve your chances of success on the GRE Analytical Writing section:

  • Practice writing essays. The best way to improve your essay writing skills is to practice. Try to write at least one essay per week. The more you practice, the better you will become at organizing your thoughts, developing your ideas, and writing clearly and concisely.
  • Get feedback on your essays. Once you have written an essay, ask a friend, family member, or teacher to read it and provide you with feedback. This feedback can help you to identify areas that need improvement.
  • Take a GRE practice test. Taking a GRE practice test can help you to get a sense of the actual test experience and identify areas where you need to improve your skills.

Mastering the Analytical Writing section of the GRE is crucial for a successful application to graduate school. By following the strategies outlined in this guide, you can improve your chances of earning a high score on the Analytical Writing section and demonstrating your ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
