The border between the United States and Canada is one of the longest and most heavily fortified in the world. But there is another border, less well-known and far less patrolled, that runs along the northern edge of the United States. This is the border between the United States and the Canadian province of Quebec.

For two thousand miles, this border winds through forests, mountains, and lakes. It is a land of forgotten stories and forgotten landscapes. In the summer of 2019, I set out to explore this forgotten border, to discover the hidden stories and forgotten landscapes that define this unique region.

## The Forgotten Border

The border between the United States and Quebec is a product of history. In the 18th century, the British and French fought a series of wars over control of North America. The Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War in 1763, established the border between the two empires along the 49th parallel north.

After the American Revolution, the United States inherited the British claim to the land north of the 49th parallel. However, the United States and Great Britain continued to dispute the border until the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which finally settled the boundary between the two countries.

The border between the United States and Quebec has remained largely unchanged since 1842. However, the region has been transformed by the passage of time. The forests have been cleared, the mountains have been mined, and the lakes have been dammed. The border has become a forgotten relic of a bygone era.

## The Journey

I began my journey in the town of Houlton, Maine. Houlton is a small town located on the border between the United States and Quebec. It is a typical border town, with a mix of English and French speakers. I spent a few days in Houlton, getting to know the town and its people. I visited the local museum, which has a fascinating exhibit on the history of the border. I also hiked to the top of Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine. From the summit of Mount Katahdin, I could see for miles in every direction. The border between the United States and Quebec stretched out before me like a long, winding scar.

From Houlton, I traveled west along the border. I passed through the towns of Fort Kent, Madawaska, and Van Buren. These are all small towns with a rich history. I stopped in each town to visit the local museum and to talk to the people. I learned about the logging industry, the potato industry, and the many other industries that have shaped the history of the region.

As I traveled west, the landscape began to change. The forests became denser, the mountains became higher, and the lakes became larger. I passed through the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a vast network of lakes and rivers that is home to a variety of wildlife. I also visited the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, a stunningly beautiful area that is home to some of the last remaining old-growth forests in the United States.

After two weeks of travel, I reached the end of my journey in the town of Jackman, Maine. Jackman is a small town located on the border between the United States and Quebec. It is a popular destination for tourists who come to enjoy the region's natural beauty.

## The People

The people I met along the way were some of the most hospitable and welcoming people I have ever encountered. They were always willing to help me out, even though I was a stranger. I learned a lot about the history and culture of the region from the people I met. I also learned a lot about the challenges that the people of the region face.

One of the biggest challenges facing the people of the region is the lack of economic opportunity. The border has divided the region, making it difficult for people to travel and trade. The region has also been hit hard by the decline in the logging and manufacturing industries. As a result, many people have left the region in search of work.

Despite the challenges they face, the people of the region are proud of their heritage and their way of life. They are determined to keep their communities alive and thriving.

## The Landscapes

The landscapes of the region are as diverse as the people. I saw everything from forests to mountains to lakes. The region is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. I was particularly impressed by the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

The landscapes of the region are also home to a variety of wildlife. I saw moose, deer, bear, and eagles. I also saw a variety of fish, including salmon, trout, and bass.

## The

My journey along the forgotten border was an unforgettable experience. I learned a lot about the history, culture, and people of the region. I also learned a lot about the challenges that the people of the region face. Despite the challenges they face, the people of the region are proud of their heritage and their way of life. They are determined to keep their communities alive and thriving.

The forgotten border is a land of hidden stories and forgotten landscapes. It is a region that is worth exploring and learning about. I encourage you to visit the region and see for yourself the beauty and diversity that it has to offer.
