Shula was born in Grand River, Ohio, in 1930. He played football at John Carroll University and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1951. However, he never played in the NFL because he was drafted into the US Army. After serving in the military, Shula returned to John Carroll University as an assistant coach. In 1958, he joined the Colts as a defensive backfield coach.

In 1963, Shula was named head coach of the Colts. He led the team to three NFL Championships in 1968, 1970, and 1971. In 1970, he was hired by the Miami Dolphins. He led the Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories in 1972 and 1973. The Dolphins also won the AFC Championship in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1982. The 1972 Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to complete a perfect season, finishing with a 17-0 record.

Shula retired from coaching in 1995 after 33 seasons. He finished his career with a record of 347-173-6. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Coaching Career

Shula's coaching career spanned five decades. He was known for his innovative offensive and defensive schemes. He was also known for his tough and demanding coaching style.

Shula's offensive scheme was based on the running game. He believed that a strong running game could control the clock and keep the defense off the field. He also used a variety of passing plays to keep the defense honest.

Shula's defensive scheme was based on the "No Name Defense." The No Name Defense was a zone defense that relied on speed and athleticism. The defense was very successful in stopping the pass and the run.

Shula was a master motivator. He was able to get his players to play at their best week after week. He was also a great strategist. He was always one step ahead of his opponents.

Super Bowls

Shula led his teams to six Super Bowls. He won two Super Bowls with the Colts and four Super Bowls with the Dolphins.

The Colts' Super Bowl victories came in 1968 and 1970. The Dolphins' Super Bowl victories came in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1982.

Shula's Super Bowl record is 2-4. He is the only coach in NFL history to have lost four Super Bowls.

Legacy

Shula is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He won more games than any other coach. He also led his teams to more Super Bowls than any other coach.

Shula's legacy will continue to live on for years to come. He is a true football legend.
