L. Ron Hubbard was a man of many talents. He was a successful science fiction writer, a naval officer, and the founder of the Church of Scientology. His life was full of adventure, intrigue, and controversy.

Early Life And Career

Lafayette Ronald Hubbard was born in Tilden, Nebraska, on March 13, 1911. His father, Harry Ross Hubbard, was a U.S. Navy officer, and his mother, Ledora May Waterbury, was a schoolteacher. Hubbard had a younger brother, Wilbur.

Hubbard's family moved to Helena, Montana, when he was a young child. He attended Helena High School, where he was a star athlete and a member of the debate team. After graduating from high school, Hubbard attended Montana State College for a year before transferring to George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

While at George Washington University, Hubbard studied engineering and physics. He also became interested in writing. He wrote for the university newspaper and published several short stories in science fiction magazines.

In 1932, Hubbard dropped out of college and moved to New York City. He worked as a pulp fiction writer, writing stories for magazines such as Argosy and Amazing Stories. Hubbard's stories were often action-packed and full of adventure. He also wrote a number of Westerns and detective novels.

Naval Career

In 1941, Hubbard joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a lieutenant commander in the Pacific theater during World War II. Hubbard commanded a patrol boat and a submarine chaser. He also served as a staff officer on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

Hubbard's naval career was marked by both success and controversy. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the Battle of Midway. However, he was also court-martialed for disobeying orders.

Scientology

After the war, Hubbard returned to the United States. He began to develop a new philosophy that he called Scientology. Scientology is a religion that teaches that humans are spiritual beings who have been trapped in a cycle of reincarnation. The goal of Scientology is to help people achieve spiritual enlightenment and freedom.

Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology in 1954. The church has since grown into a worldwide organization with millions of members. Scientology has been controversial from the beginning. Critics have accused the church of being a cult that preys on its members.

Later Years And Death

Hubbard continued to lead the Church of Scientology until his death in 1986. He died at the age of 74 from a stroke. Hubbard's legacy is complex and controversial. He was a brilliant writer and a charismatic leader. He also created a religion that has been embraced by millions of people. However, Hubbard's life was also marked by controversy and scandal.
